Enlarged Prostate Treatment Options PDF Print E-mail

At Advanced Urology, we believe that you are a key member of your health care team. As such, we work closely with you to determine treatment that is most appropriate for your medical history, lifestyle and preferences.

Common Enlarged Prostate/Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) treaments include:

Alpha Blockers

Medications used to relax the muscles around the prostate and bladder neck. This BPH treatment does not reduce the size of the prostate, but works quickly. It typically begins treating BPH symptoms within one to two days.

5-Alpha Reductase Inhibitors

Medications used to partially shrink the prostate gland by controlling the creation of DHT (dihydnotestosterone). This BPH treatment usually takes about three months before symptoms will lessen.

Transurethral Microwave Thermotherapy (TUMT)

This minimally invasive BPH laser surgery uses microwave heat (controlled by a computer) to destroy the obstructing tissue. It is recommended for mild to moderate blockage and can be performed right in our office using topical anesthesia.

Transurethral Resection of Prostate (TURP)

This BPH surgery has been considered the gold standard of BHP treatment. It is a minimally invasive surgery performed to remove tissue pressing against the urethra. During the procedure, your urologist will use an instrument inserted through the urethra to remove the section of the prostate that is blocking urine flow. TURP typically requires hospitalization and general anesthesia.

GreenLight™ XPS Laser Therapy

Advanced Urology's Dr. Sarram First in Denver & Colorado to Perform GreenLight™ XPS Laser Therapy for Benign Prostate Hyperplasia/Enlarged Prostate Treatment (October 2010)

GreenLight XPS (Xcelerated Performance System) Laser Therapy is a less invasive option that offers the same results of traditional TURP without some of the bothersome side effects associated with BPH surgery. Instead of cutting tissue (as in the TURP procedure), this technique uses a laser to vaporize tissue, creating a channel through which men can urinate more freely. Benefits of the GreenLight procedure include:

  • Quick urine flow improvement
  • Virtually bloodless
  • Short (or no) catheterization (under 24 hours in most patients)
  • Outpatient procedure in otherwise healthy patients
  • Quick return to normal activity
  • Long-term symptom relief

Plus, there have been less than one percent of reported cases of post-operative erectile dysfunction with this BPH procedure.
