Penile Prosthesis Insertion PDF Print E-mail

Men who are experiencing erectile dysfunction for a known medical reason that has not responded to other treatment options may benefit from penile prosthesis insertion.

Penile prosthesis insertion is a surgery in which a device is implanted into the penis to produce an erection-like state, allowing the man to have sex.

There are two types of penile prosthesis: malleable and inflatable.

Malleable

This type of procedure involves inserting bendable rods into the penis that leave it in a semi-rigid state. The patient simply has to lift or adjust the penis for sex. While this is the easier procedure to perform, it may be more difficult to conceal.

Inflatable (Penis Erection Pump)

A more natural feeling option, this type of procedure involves implanting inflatable tubes, a reservoir and pump. Prior to having sex, the patient simply uses the pump (usually located in the scrotum) to fill the inflatable tubes (located on either side of the penis) with sterile fluid from the reservoir. When he would like to return to a flaccid state, a deflation valve can be pressed, allowing the fluid to move back into the reservoir.
