Advanced Urology First in Denver and Colorado to Perform GreenLight™ XPS Laser Therapy for Benign Prostate Hyperplasia/Enlarged Prostate Treatment

October 2010: Advanced Urology’s board-certified urologist Ali Sarram, M.D., is using a state-of–the-art laser to treat men with enlarged prostates (also called benign prostate hyperplasia or BPH). While GreenLight Laser Therapy has been an excellent option for enlarged prostate treatment for years, an improvement on the laser, GreenLight XPS (Xcelerated Performance System) Laser Therapy, now is available. This new laser offers more speed, more efficiency, a longer fiber life and better coagulation than previous versions. Dr. Sarram is the first in the region to use this new laser.

About Enlarged Prostate/Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH)

Enlarged prostate/BPH is an extremely common condition, affecting an estimated 50 percent of men ages 60 and older and an estimated 90 percent of men ages 70 and older. Men suffering from this condition have a non-cancerous growth of the prostate that squeezes the urethra (through which urine passes) making urination difficult. While the cause is unknown, experts believe it simply may be related to hormonal changes that affect men as they age.

Traditional Prostate Treatment with TURP

Traditionally, the gold standard of treatment for enlarged prostate/BPH has been transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) when a section of the prostate is removed through the urethra. This surgery, while extremely effective, requires hospitalization and catheterization (placement of a catheter for urination) for at least 48 hours. In addition, it comes with all the risks associated with undergoing anesthesia, post-operative bleeding and other surgical complications.

Minimally Invasive GreenLight Laser Therapy

GreenLight Laser Therapy is a less invasive option that offers the same results of traditional TURP without the bothersome side effects. Instead of cutting tissue (as in the TURP procedure), this technique uses a laser to vaporize tissue, creating a channel through which men can urinate more freely.

The new XPS (Xcelerated Performance System) is a recent improvement on the GreenLight Laser Therapy. Released in early 2010, the XPS laser offers an even faster, more efficient procedure, a longer laser fiber life and improved coagulation (blood clotting).
