Minimally Invasive Uterine Prolapse Treatment in Denver: Hysterectomy & Sacrocolpopexy PDF Print E-mail

First in Denver & Colorado to Offer Robot-Assisted Hysterectomy and Sacrocolpopexy Together

September 2010: Women with uterine prolapse now have a more effective and efficient option for treatment. When hysterectomy is recommended to correct uterine prolapse, an additional procedure, sacrocolpopexy, helps provide long-term support of the vagina, decreasing the risk of additional complications. Denver’s Advanced Urology now is offering women a leading-edge option: receiving these two life-changing procedures robotically⎯and on the same day.

Pelvic Prolapse photoHysterectomy & Sacrocolpopexy Performed Together

Advanced Urology’s board-certified urologist Michael Glass, M.D., works with Denver-area OB/GYNs who perform robot-assisted hysterectomies. Just after the obstetrician/gynecologist has completed the hysterectomy, Dr. Glass uses the da Vinci® robotic system to perform the sacrocolpopexy.

"By performing these two procedures during the same surgery, our patients not only save time, but they also save themselves from the risks of undergoing two separate surgeries," Dr. Glass explains. "Additionally, by using the robot for both procedures, we greatly reduce the impact on the body, often reducing blood loss, creating a shorter recovery and a quicker return to normal, daily activity."

Uterine Prolapse Treatment from Advanced Urology

Advanced Urology is the only practice in Colorado to offer minimally invasive, robotic sacrocolpopexy for uterine prolapse. And patients are grateful. Those who have undergone surgery with the da Vinci robot report that the surgery is much easier than ever imagined⎯and is highly successful.

About Uterine Prolapse

An estimated one-third of U.S. women will suffer from pelvic prolapse in her lifetime. Uterine prolapse is a form of pelvic prolapse in which the uterus falls from its normal position into, and sometimes through, the vagina. Often, a hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus or womb) is recommended to treat severe cases of uterine prolapse. Sacrocolpopexy, also called sacral colpopexy, is another procedure beneficial to a uterine prolapse patient undergoing a hysterectomy. In this procedure, the surgeon inserts mesh to hold the vagina in the correct position.

Robotic Surgery to Correct Uterine Prolapse

Using the da Vinci robot to assist in hysterectomy and sacrocolpopexy offers many benefits over traditional, open surgery. This minimally invasive surgical option often means:

  • Significantly less pain
  • Less blood loss and need for transfusions
  • Less risk of infection
  • Less scarring
  • A shorter hospital stay
  • Shorter recovery time
  • Faster return to normal activities
