Advanced Urology First in Colorado to Use Pro-Vas™ Occlusion Vasectomy Clip

Minimally Invasive Vasectomy with No Cutting & Faster Procedure Time

March 17, 2010: Damian Sorce, MD, board-certified urologist at Advanced Urology in Denver, is the first urologist in Colorado to perform the new Pro Vas procedure for male sterilization. Pro Vas, a quick, in-office procedure is a new minimally invasive vasectomy option.

"Many men are reluctant to undergo vasectomy for fear of the pain commonly associated with the sterilization process," explains Dr. Sorce. "With the new Pro Vas clip, there’s no cutting, causing less trauma to the genitals. Plus, we can perform this procedure in less than 10 minutes— about five minutes less than our standard no scalpel vasectomy."

"We are continually looking for treatment options for our patients and the Pro-Vas clip brings another option for men in Denver and Colorado who are considering vasectomy," says Advanced Urology’s Dr. Geoff Ledgerwood, the only other board-certified urologist in Colorado performing the new Pro Vas Occlusion Vasectomy for male sterilization. "Hopefully concerns of vasectomy will be lowered with the no-cutting option that Pro Vas offers."

How the Pro Vas Clip Works

Pro-Vas Vasectomy ClipThe Pro Vas Occlusion procedure is similar to the no scalpel vasectomy, which also is performed by urologists at Advanced Urology. First, the scrotum is numbed by using the no needle vasectomy technique where anesthetic is delivered through a high-pressure sprayer. Once the area is numb, one single skin puncture is made (versus two larger incisions with a traditional vasectomy). A small titanium spring clip is then clamped onto the vas deferens in order to block the flow of sperm. Unlike a no-scalpel vasectomy, the vas deferens is not cut, burned or removed from the scrotum. As there is less manipulation and dissection required, procedure time and pain is reduced, resulting in a quicker recovery.

Pro Vas Effectiveness

Vasectomies are considered safe, are nearly 100 percent effective and do not interfere with sexual pleasure. The Pro-Vas titanium clip, which is modeled after similar clips that have proven success in treating neuroaneurysms, is believed to be just as effective. As with all vasectomies, a patient is not considered 100 percent sterile until their sperm count is zero. It typically takes 20 ejaculations or 6 weeks to get a sperm count to zero.
