At Advanced Urology, we believe that you are a key member of your health care team. As such, we work closely with you to determine treatment that is most appropriate for your medical history, lifestyle and treatment preferences. Common treatments for Enlarged Prostate/Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) include: Alpha BlockersMedications used to relax the muscles around the prostate and bladder neck. This treatment does not reduce the size of the prostate, but works quickly. It typically begins treating symptoms within one to two days. 5-Alpha Reductase InhibitorsMedications used to partially shrink the prostate gland by controlling the creation of DHT (dihydnotestosterone). This treatment usually takes about three months to begin seeing a reduction in symptoms. Transurethral Microwave Thermotherapy (TUMT)This minimally invasive procedure uses microwave heat (controlled by a computer) to destroy the obstructing tissue. It is recommended for mild to moderate blockage and can be performed right in our office using topical anesthesia. Transurethral Resection of Prostate (TURP)This treatment is the most common surgical option for BPH and provides the greatest reduction in symptoms. It is a minimally invasive surgery performed to remove tissue pressing against the urethra. >>Next: Questions To Ask Your Doctor About Enlarged Prostate |
