An estimated one in four women experiences sexual dysfunction in her life. While it can occur at any time during the lifespan, it most often occurs after the birth of a baby, during menopause or during significant illness (such as cancer).

Female impotence (sexual dysfunction), is a broad term referring to a woman’s difficulty during any stage of the sexual experience.

Four Main Types of Female Impotence

  • Diminished (or absent) sexual desire: A lessened or absent sex drive
  • Diminished sexual arousal: Despite a desire to have sex, patients find it difficult or impossible to become aroused or maintain arousal
  • Orgasmic disorder: A consistent inability to achieve orgasm, despite sufficient arousal and stimulation
  • Sexual pain disorder: Pain associated with sex or vaginal contact
