You and your urologist will plan a treatment based on what type of prostatitis you have. Prostatitis treatment options include:

  • Antibiotics: to help you fight infection
  • Pain Relievers: to help relieve back and groin pain symptoms (ie ibuprofen or aspirin)
  • Alpha Blockers: to be used to relax bladder muscles and assist with urination
  • Muscle Relaxant: to help relieve enlarged prostate pain
  • Physical Therapy/Exercise: to show exercises to stretch and strengthen your pelvic area and help with relaxation when urinating
  • Hot baths: warm water can help relive symptoms
  • Rest
  • Increased fluid intake
  • Surgery: In some cases, surgery may be needed to open blocked ducts

Treatment for prostatitis is usually effective and your symptoms should resolve. However, regular follow-up with your physician may be necessary if symptoms recur or repeat treatment is needed.
